Yamaha DTR?

Post by Greg J on Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:45 am

Iv been offered a mint cond DTR as a swap for my RS.. wondering if its a good swap?
What do you think?

I was going to sell the RS anyway, and iv read 22bhp for the DTR, is that restricted, or unrestricted?

And speeds? I dont want a 60mph 2stroke. haha

Any opinions welcome Smile

Mt Dtr sits at 70mph all day and when you twist the throttle more you can still feel power and it creeps upto 80mph. Really, you HAVE to get a full DEP exhaust otherwise there just shit and TOO quite, With my DEP theres like 3 stages off power.

1,750rpm - 4,500rpm Not much power
4,750rpm - 7,750rpm The powervalve starts to open and you get about 18hp with DEP
8,000rpm + The DEP kicks in and gives it even more power and Lots of more noise, and it doesnt sound like some Rs50 with a Race exhaust, Sounds like a Proper 2 Stroke and its really loud in Tunnels Very Happy

Whats a DEP? lol

And not yet, he messaged me today, so looking to ask him for all the details when he messages me back..

Is it not like the RS, i sat at between 80 and 90 then it seized. lol
So its a lot more reliable for a 2t?

dtrs are fooking holligain bikes take beatings all day bottom ends are fucking tought , could always fit the dtr200 top end , oh and with the dep its common pratcie that they slow the bikes down you want reallyt a standrd chamber with like a carbon road can styled pipe but then it could be due to the fac people dont jet right theres also the snorkel mod like, as for relaibilty it ll run rings round a rs but ask your slef will you be happy with a dirt bike when you have been used to kd int it every where i know i cooudnt do it to be fair

You dont need to Upjet the carb and dont do the Snorkel mod or the Reed valve mod all of them will make it run bad

Dt125's are ment to have Dt200 carberaters

Was tempted by the DTR, went for a KMX in the end,
DTR probably better for road riding I reckon, for some reason though they were £1 grand more expensive than a KMX new.
I think top end on both bikes is similar, easily 70mph, used to do 80mph easily on my KMX before but performance has been on the slide lately :-(
No way a DTR or any 125 would be 22bhp restricted, that's not learner legal.

My Dt pulled 17.9hp with Standerd exhaust and with the Restricters still in the exhaust, Plus it had a Dry chain with was very loose cause i forgot to tighten it up and... My rear wheel bearings where fucked because the next day they collapsed and my wheel was wobbling very bad so id say it could of got about 19hp if the chain was lubed and tight and good wheel bearings

Its getting dropped off in an hour or so, so il get some pics of it up Smile

Do i have to warm it up like an RS, or can i go when its cold, but keep the revs low?

And am i ok to sit at 80?
Or will it go pop like the RS did? haha

it will struggle to get to 80mph unless your going down a steep-ish hill and the bike will be SCREAMING its tits off, it will sit at 70 no problem but it gets there pritty quickly.

You will have to warm it up, Like every other 2 stroke.

I like it! Very Happy

It started juddering and kept cutting out.. yes, it was fuel. haha
First ride was good, feels as quick as the RS, just need to put the DEP exhaust on.. wonder what diff it will make

Top end was only near 70ish, so maby the DEP will improve this?

Nice looking Dt, One thing you need to do know is see if the Top speed Restricter is still in. Its a VERY simple process. Take the front cowl off then under the speedo clock theres 2 pins and take them out and the 2washers should come out (Peice of Rubber and metal that interlock together) then lift the speedo up and if theres a little Fuse find (White Regtangle) take that out but DO NOT cut any off the wires or you wont even be able to do the speed limits. Tape it as far away from the speedo as you want and tape it too somethink solid so it doesnt rattle around then put your clock back in and its done Cool

[center]Thats the basterd restricter in the second picture. (Remember DO NOT cut any of the wires even if about 100 tell you too cause it will mess your brain up on your bike and i will do about 20mph.

Also dont do the Snorkle or the Reed valve mod, They make no difference and even some people have said the reed valve mod has fucked there bike up.

Re: Yamaha DTR?

Oh right, well i looked near the clocks and under the speed there is a green? wire sticking out, i think its green, will take a pic tomorrow when its light and iv cleaned it & swapped exhaust's over Smile

And the revvs were quite high when i was doing 70ish, near redline.. and i dont want to stick near there, because of what happend to the RS. lol

And what would cause the temp guage to not work?
I must of done over 20-30miles and it didnt come off cold. lol

The coolant is all brown and shitty, so il claen that out, might fix it?

And finally, my tacho doesnt work (the trip one)
It got to 2.2miles and wouldnt move, it was a bitch to get it to 000000 as it didnt want to move them. Id twist the rubber knob and nothing would happen?
Should i take it apart? Or quick and easy fix? Neutral

With the DEP exhaust you get more power at 8,000rpm and its much much louder

You dont know why the temp guage wouldnt work?

Thats bugging me, as the RS one played up, and is a factor in it seizing. lol

So if im hooning it along as 70+ i dont want it to overheat and seize.. thats why i want to look at the guage Smile

I think the temp senser is on the cylinder head, so have a look at it and follow the wire too the guage to see if its in good nick.

Fixed temp guage (was the green wire)
Top speed it 70+ so not sure if the restrictor is in?

There was a white rectangle last time i looked, but will see tomorrow if it has the fuse behind it, but at 80ish it wont really go anymore.. is that normal?

And there is loads of power at 6K+.. im running DEP rear silencer, but normal header, as the DEP has a hole in it, and i need to get it welded (its already welded, but a wank welder Neutral )

And it is really good fun Chadz, can pick them up dirt cheap, depending on age/ cond, etc..
And can go off road with it, so £25 and i can have a go at jumps, etc.. all day Razz
